The car is fixed. We called AAA to tow the car to the dealership where a friend of mine is a mechanic. The tow truck driver took a look and said, "Lemme see if I can fix it so you don't have to use your AAA." He reached into the compartment, fiddled around for a minute and got in the car and it shifted fine. He said that the clip that held the shifter cable onto the transmission had come off. It would still need to be replaced but it would work for now.
So I took the car to my friend and after much futzing around with different clips, he repaired it. Apparently, Mazda doesn't have just a clip and wanted to charge $140 for a new cable/clip combo. He said "Fuck that. I can fix it!" and figured out a suitable replacement. He didn't want anything for it but I insisted on giving him a $20 at least.
So to make a long story short (Too late!), the car got fixed for $20 rather than the $1400+ it could have been.
So YAY!!!!, we still have money to put into savings (and spend on useless crap)!
